Hillary’s Star

Por Maritere Arce

Hillary Clinton lives not in Washington D.C, or Arkansas but on T.V. This type of virtual residence could only be possible in our times when anyone filmed can come and go in and out of our homes with the click of a button.

But in Hillary’s case there is an element that puts her above the rest for her aspirations: her star quality.

Like a lady Diana of politics, a large part of the public is seduced by her personality, self assurance and intelligence.

Her tease with the candidacy for the New York senate seat to be vacated by Daniel Patrick Moinihan is fueled by those in the democratic party who feel she is the only match for a possible race against mayor Giuliani on the republican side.

His stern style and politics contrast perfectly with her personal ‘Oprah style’ approach to issues.

For her it is a tough choice: the candidacy could mean a shot at writing a page in history. Who does not want to be loved? However, the vicious attacks she has faced on occasion are only a taste of what Hillary, the candidate, could face.

With each step towards a public life she takes a step backwards in her zone of privacy. After a turbulent season in the public eye I can’t imagine anyone who would willingly endure more of the same.

A role as a private citizen influencing public policy would mean having the best of both worlds for citizen Hillary Clinton.
